"To the Stars through Difficulties"

“Can’t we all just get along?” is what every Kansan is feeling this week, as news that the once a decade legislative restricting debacle will be settled in court, instead of the legislature, reached kitchen tables across the Sunflower State.

This is childhood backyard bickering at its best, only to be settled by the parent, or in this case the courts. Kansas is officially the last state in the union to compose a redistricting map and the process is not yet complete. Three federal judges will now decide the fate of two million Kansans instead of their duly elected officials.
Gerrymandering at its best; almost worse than Illinois District 4. One Senate Map placed 2 Senators and a declared candidate in the same district; a district gerrymandered to be 15 miles wide and 75 across.
Many state legislatures are putting their political future above what is best for Kansas citizens by drawing out potential political rivals. Kansas has become the laughing stock of the nation.
People don’t get involved in politics because of this political side. There are many qualified every-day Kansans that should and would run for office if it weren’t for the smoke filled back room deals.

Kansas is sure living up to part of its motto of “Ad Astra per Aspera” (To the Stars through Difficulties). Just hopefully we don’t have the same difficulties in ten years.
